DUNBAR Family History
This famous Scottish locational name derives from the Barony of Dunbar in the county of Berwick. The surname, it is claimed, descends from Earl Gospatric of Northumberland C. 1070, whose grandfather was the lay abbot of Dunkeld, although quite what this has to do with the surname development is unclear. Our research indicates that the surname in its recognizable form was not apparently recorded until the 13th century, see below, although thereafter the Dunbar nameholders played an important role in Scottish and the Border history. At various times from the 14th century they held considerable estates in Wigtownshire, where they were prominent amongst the Border clans that caused mayhem throughout Northern England, and the more gentile parts of Scotland...Select Audience

My earliest known Irish Dunbar paternal ancestor is Samuel Dunbar b. 1735 in Wicklow, Wicklow, Leinster, Ireland. He married Ann Moore (b. 1744, d. 1814-02-04). They had six children: Ann (b. 1761-11-05), Mary (b. 1763-12-11), Pat (b. 1766-03-17), John (b. 1769-01-27), Alexander Samuel (b. 1771-09-13), and Samuel (b. 1777-07-29).? I am related to Samuel Dunbar (b. 1735) via: Alexander Samuel, George, Robert Horace, Clyde Harvey, and Hugh Cochrane (my father). Alexander Samuel Dunbar emigrated from Ireland to Ontario Canada in 1832.

Hello,
My GG Grandmother was Rebecca Sinclair (nee DUNBAR) born 1819 in Eyreshire? Ireland. She had a brother named James Dunbar and I think her father was named James as well. Her brother James went to live in Dublin and married fairly well there to a lady called Elizabeth Twine.
He was a shoemaker I believe.
It was always thought that this part of the family were of Scots decent.
Also, when Rebecca married she married a Samuel Sinclair, also of irish/Scots decent and both of them were Presbyterian. They resided in small town inland of Galway called Balinasloe.
If you know anything about these Dunbar's l would be greatful and interested. I have some dates and can supply if required.

My father told me many years ago that the Dunbar name originated in Scotland, but his line was forced to 'swim for Ireland' during the Clan wars.

my mum's maiden name was Dunbar, she was from Liverpool, England. Her 2x great grandfather Alexander Dunbar was born in Belfast aby 1840 and he married a Margaret Dunbar. Margaret's father was Charles Dunbar born abt 1821 in Ireland, no baptism found so not sure which part of Ireland he is from. It's possible Alexander and Margert were cousins
All the Dunbar's in my mum's family were devout Roman Catholics. We have no knowledge of how and when they came to Ireland. They are a bit of a mystery.
