The surname Dempsey is generally accepted as being of Irish origins and therefore correctly O'Dempsey. There can be little doubt that most nameholders do derive originally from this source. However the name has also been long recorded in England James Dempse being recorded in the Guild of Corpus Christi, for the city of York, in 1526, and it is believed that English name holders derive from now "lost" medieval village called Demsey, meaning the island (eg) on the lake (dembel), however this is not proven. Dempsey
I've been tracing my Dempsey family for two years. It was useful to do during the covid lockdowns! Starting with just a name on a grave stone, I have now found where my great Irish grandfather Dempsey and great grandmother (nee Brophy) lived in Laois. My grandfather was also born in Laois and is one of many siblings, he left Ireland in his early 20s to live and work in the U.K. He met his first wife and sadly she died years later. Eventually he met my grandmother and they settled in Yorkshire, my mother was there daughter. I would love to hear from any Dempsey and Brophy members from Laois.

I have thousands of Dempsey relatives, have been able to trace to Canada & the United States but stumped on which relatives came from Ireland. My Great Grandfather was Patrick Dempsey, and there were so many. I have my family tree on ancestry.

I been looking in to my family history and itโs amazing to know how many dempseys there is and that my family stared off from the oโdempseys in irland Offaly my grandad was myles Dempsey from Liverpool his dad John who had 12 other brothers and sisters then his dad Lawrence Dempsey from irland Laois and his dad Lawrence from Laois and then his dad was James dempseys got really far with my grandads would love any family out there who r from same family to get in contact would be amazing to go to irland see Offaly and the castle that r ancestors lived and Owed and see if there is still and family history there are family living there as am still living in Liverpool England and am 29 thank you means so much
